Queensland Synoptic

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is causing chaos along the southeast coast of the Coral Sea, so grab your umbrella and stay indoors as it makes its way towards the coast, potentially arriving just in time to ruin your weekend plans. Meanwhile, the rest of the state will experience some light winds and scattered showers, but don't worry, you can still enjoy a picnic in the central and western interior without getting blown away.

Forecast for Herbert and Lower Burdekin:

Get ready for some sunshine with just a sprinkle of rain possible - but don't worry, it won't ruin your day! Expect gentle breezes to keep you cool, with overnight temps dropping to the 20s and daytime highs in the 30s. Time to break out the sunscreen and enjoy the weather!

Monsoon Special:

The next monsoon pulse due in Phase 6 (Gulf to Coral Sea) around the 26th March to 2nd April. Due to the 3rd pulse normally being weak, it tends to come around quicker so could be a week earlier.

Alfred now a Category 2 system again, here is the detail and plot.

This is the before and after cross times expected. Order of images should be (Mar 06 EC, GFS, ACCESS) then (Mar 07 EC, GFS, ACCESS) and the wind speeds are average at the strongest location, not gusts. Alfred is expected to approach as a Category 2, and quickly downgrade to a 1 once it starts to cross the coast. While for many this might seem like not much, it is a long time to have wind and rain and storm surge and that will push trees, fences etc over and will lift loose items. If you can lift it, so can a Cat 1 gust. Windows post 1970 are built to withstand 200km/h winds.

More details once the forecasts update later today.
