National Synoptic Situation

National Temperature and Rainfall

  • Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.

  • Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.

National Synoptic Situation

QLD:

Well, looks like we've got a trough moseying on over to central Australia, while a ridge is holding strong over eastern Queensland. This ridge is going to flex its muscles even more on Friday as a high stakes its claim in the Tasman Sea. Meanwhile, a trough in the far northern Coral Sea is causing a bit of a ruckus, combining with the ridge to whip up some winds and showers along the east coast. Oh, and there's a weak tropical low hanging out in the northern Coral Sea, but don't worry - it's expected to steer clear of the Queensland coast for now. So, grab your umbrellas and hold onto your hats, folks - it's going to be an interesting few days!

NSW and ACT:

Well isn't this just delightful - a trough here, a ridge there, and another trough just hanging out in western New South Wales. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, a cold front decides to crash the party over the weekend. Looks like we'll be dealing with some unsettled conditions, thanks to that pesky trough. And the fun doesn't stop there, folks - it seems like that trough will be sticking around for much of next week. Time to break out the umbrellas and brace ourselves for some good old-fashioned weather shenanigans.

VIC:

So, basically, we've got a high pressure system chilling south of the Bight, sending a southerly airstream our way. This high will eventually shuffle off to the Tasman Sea by Friday, leaving us to deal with a trough and cold front moving in from the west on Saturday. Expect the wind to change direction to more northerly as this front rolls through on Sunday. But fear not, a new high pressure system will swoop in behind the front, keeping that southerly airstream blowing early next week. So, get ready for some weather whiplash, folks!

SA:

Well, folks, it looks like we have a high pressure system setting up camp south of Kangaroo Island, but don't worry, it's just passing through on its way to the Tasman Sea by Friday. Following close behind is a trough and cold front, ready to crash the party in SA over the weekend. But fear not, another high is already gearing up to take its place over the Bight early next week. Mother nature sure knows how to keep us on our toes!

WA:

Well, isn't this just peachy? A big ol' trough is hanging out over the northern parts of our fine state, while a tropical low (21U, if you're into that sort of thing) is moseying on up north of the Kimberley. It's thinking about heading west in the next few days, and hey, there's even a chance it might throw a cyclone party over the weekend. But don't worry, it's gonna keep its distance from the WA coast, so you can relax and enjoy the show from afar. Just another day in paradise, folks.

TAS:

Well, it looks like we've got a high coming in from the northwest of Tasmania, making its way over the State this evening. By Friday, it will be hanging out in the Tasman Sea. Expect some northerly winds on Saturday as a cold front approaches for Sunday. Then, another high will be making its way towards Tasmania on Monday, arriving late in the evening. Just your typical weather rollercoaster ride down under!

NT:

So, we've got a trough hanging out over central districts, while a ridge is playing traffic cop and directing some dry southeasterly winds down south in the NT. And just when you thought things couldn't get more exciting, another trough is gearing up to crash the party in the southern districts this weekend. It's like a never-ending cycle of weather drama, folks. So, grab your umbrellas and hold onto your hats, because things are about to get interesting.

NQ Rainfall 24 Accumulated (ACCESS G)

Monsoon Update

A high-pressure system is keeping low 22U/93P in place, with slight movement away from the coast before returning by the 26th. The new high will allow it to shift south a bit but not much. The area of convection, 93P, is about 185 nautical miles south-southwest of Port Moresby. Conditions are favourable for development, with moderate wind shear and warm sea temperatures. The system is expected to move southeast, with the GFS model predicting further movement. Maximum winds are estimated at 18-23 knots, and pressure is around 1006 mb. The chance of significant tropical cyclone development in the next 24 hours remains low.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Friday, 21st February

Well, it looks like those lucky folks in the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts can expect some high temperatures today. So, make sure to stay hydrated and maybe invest in some extra deodorant.

Saturday, 22nd February

Grab your sunscreen and umbrellas, folks! We've got a mixed bag of weather heading our way. Expect mostly sunny skies in the interior south of Hughenden, perfect for those who love a good tan. But don't get too comfortable, because isolated to scattered showers are making their way to other areas. You might want to keep an eye out for isolated thunderstorms north of Burketown and Coen, just to keep things interesting. And along the east coast north of Bowen, showers are on the menu, possibly becoming widespread at times. So, if you're in that area, be prepared for a little splash of rain. Fresh to strong southeasterly winds are set to blow along the east coast south of Cooktown, so hold onto your hats! And as for temperatures, they'll be above average in the west and Peninsula, but near or slightly below average in the east. So, layer up or strip down accordingly, depending on where you are. Stay dry, stay safe, and enjoy the weather rollercoaster ride!

Sunday, 23rd February

Grab your sunglasses if you're heading to the interior south of Hughenden - it's mostly sunny there. Elsewhere, you might need to dodge some isolated to scattered showers, with the occasional thunderstorm north of Cairns. Showers could decide to throw a party in the Wet Tropics, so don't forget your umbrella. Be prepared for some fresh to strong southeasterly winds along the east coast - it's like nature's way of giving you a free blowout. Temperatures will be above average in the west, but don't get too excited - they'll be near or slightly below average in the east. So, pack your sunscreen and raincoat, because you never know what Mother Nature has up her sleeve.

Monday, 24th February

Well, it seems like Mother Nature is feeling a bit indecisive today. In the interior south of Hughenden, we can expect mostly sunny skies, while elsewhere it's a bit of a mixed bag with isolated to scattered showers and even some isolated thunderstorms north of Cooktown to Kowanyama. Don't forget your umbrella if you're in the area from Cairns to Weipa, as showers could become widespread at times. And hold onto your hats, because we're looking at some fresh to strong southeasterly winds along the east coast. As for temperatures, it looks like the west is really showing off with some well above average highs. The remaining interior is keeping it above average, while the rest of us are just hanging out near or slightly below average. So, dress accordingly and enjoy the unpredictable show that is today's weather forecast.
