National Synoptic Situation

National Temperature and Rainfall

  • Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.

  • Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.

State conditions

QLD:

Well, it looks like a trough is making its way out of Queensland, leaving behind a ridge that will stick around for a while in the east. Meanwhile, a weak trough is just chilling up north, drifting west and causing a bit of a stir in western Queensland. But fear not, folks, as it may high-tail it out of the state by the end of the week as a high moves in from the Tasman Sea. So grab your umbrellas and hold onto your hats, it's gonna be an interesting few days in the land down under!

NSW and ACT:

Well, it seems like Mother Nature is playing a little game of tug-of-war across the state. In the south and east, we've got this high pressure ridge keeping things cool and dry - perfect weather for a picnic or maybe a round of golf. But out west, there's a broad trough causing a bit of a ruckus, and to top it off, we've got a deep low pressure system cruising towards New Zealand like it's late for a sheep shearing competition. Now, brace yourselves for a series of cold fronts swooping down in the south, making you dig out those winter coats from the back of the closet. And just when you thought you could pack away the umbrella, a trough is sneaking up near the coast midweek, ready to bring back those pesky showers in the east. And as if that wasn't enough, a warm northerly airstream is gearing up for a late-week entrance, followed by a cold front crashing the party on the weekend. Looks like it's time to start playing musical layers with your wardrobe.

VIC:

Looks like Mother Nature is playing a game of tug-of-war with a high pressure ridge and a cold front in Victoria. The cold front will be crossing Tasmania and giving the southern parts of the state a little clip on Tuesday. But fear not, as a new high pressure ridge will be coming in to save the day. This high will slowly make its way east over Bass Strait and into the Tasman Sea by the end of the week. So grab your raincoat and your sunglasses, folks, it's going to be a wild ride!

SA:

So, it seems like we've got a high pressure system chilling out over some waters near Kangaroo Island, spreading its vibes over SA like a broad ridge. This high and ridge are planning to take a trip eastwards in the coming days, while a low pressure trough from WA is slowly making its way towards us. But don't worry, that trough will lose its strength by mid-week and another high will swoop in from the south. And just when you thought it was safe to relax, a cold front and trough are gearing up to crash our party from the west next weekend. So, get ready for some weather shenanigans ahead!

WA:

Well, it looks like we've got ourselves a broad trough extending from the Pilbara coast through the South Interior. And if that wasn't enough, another trough branch is set to extend from the Pilbara down the west coast starting Monday. So, folks, get ready for some interesting weather patterns in the coming days. It's like Mother Nature decided to throw us a curveball just to keep us on our toes. Better pack an umbrella and a sun hat, just to be safe!

TAS:

Looks like Tasmania is in for a rollercoaster of weather this week! Starting off with a cool southerly airstream turning westerly overnight, thanks to a high pressure system creeping in from the west. Then on Tuesday, brace yourselves for a cold front sweeping through the state, bringing with it a persistent southwesterly stream until Wednesday. But wait, there's more! A high pressure system will swoop in from the Bight on Thursday, stretching out over Tasmania before making its way to the Tasman Sea by Friday. So grab your umbrella, sunscreen, and winter coat - it's going to be a wild ride!

NT:

Well, it seems the monsoon up in the Top End is packing its bags and heading north for a little vacation offshore. Meanwhile, a fancy ridge is swooping in to bring some dry southeasterly winds down south in the NT. So grab your umbrella and sunscreen, because things are about to get interesting down here.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Tuesday, 18th February

Grab your umbrella if you're north of Hughenden, because there might be a few isolated showers and thunderstorms making an appearance. If you're in the eastern districts, you might also want to keep an eye out for some showers. But fear not, folks in the western and southern interior - it's mostly sunny for you! Temperatures are above average in the northwest, so maybe consider cracking out the sunscreen. The heatwave in the northeast is finally starting to calm down, so you can put away the ice packs and fans for now. Stay cool out there!

Wednesday, 19th February

Looks like Mother Nature is being a bit indecisive today, with some places getting showers and thunderstorms while others stay dry. If you're up north near Hughenden, you might want to pack an umbrella just in case. But if you're in the western and southern interior, don't bother - it's going to be mostly sunny there. Temperatures are going to be a bit all over the place too, with the northwest getting above average highs while the rest of us have to settle for near average. So, if you're in need of a little extra sunshine or you're just looking for an excuse to stay inside, today's weather has got you covered.

Thursday, 20th February

Pack your umbrella if you're heading north of Hughenden, as isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are on the agenda. Don't worry about the far southwest though, they'll just be dealing with some isolated showers. Temperatures will be above average in the west, but near average in other areas. So, bring your sunscreen and raincoat, because Mother Nature is feeling a bit indecisive today.

Friday, 21st February

Grab your sunscreen and raincoat because today's weather forecast is a mixed bag. Expect mostly sunny skies down south and scattered showers in other areas. Keep an eye out for isolated thunderstorms up north. And don't forget, temperatures will be a bit higher out west and a tad cooler out east. So, dress accordingly and prepare for a day of unpredictable weather!

Region Round-up - BOM

Forecast for North Tropical Coast and Tablelands:

You might want to pack an umbrella and maybe some extra deodorant because there's a good chance of showers today, especially in the late morning and afternoon. Don't be surprised if you hear some thunder rumbling in the distance. The winds will be light, but they'll shift from east to southeasterly to basically non-existent by evening. Just a heads up, it's going to be a warm night with temperatures dropping to 20 to 25 degrees, so maybe crank up the AC or invest in a fan. Daytime temperatures will reach a balmy 27 to 33 degrees, so be prepared to sweat a little.

Forecast for Capricornia:

Grab your sunglasses and a light jacket, because we've got a classic case of "partly cloudy" on our hands today. There's a teeny-tiny chance of a shower hanging out by the coast, but don't hold your breath for any rainbows elsewhere. Winds will be feeling a bit indecisive, starting off in the east and southeasterly direction at 15 to 20 km/h, then switching things up to east and northeasterly later in the day. It's like they can't make up their minds, but hey, at least they're keeping us on our toes. As for temperatures, we're looking at a cozy overnight low of 18 to 23 degrees. So, grab an extra blanket or snuggle up with a loved one (or a pet, we don't judge). Daytime highs will be hitting the low to mid 30s, so make sure to stay hydrated and maybe invest in some portable air conditioning. You know, just in case.
