Rainย typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.
Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.
State conditions
QLD:
Well, it looks like we've got a whole lot of trough action happening up in here. The monsoon trough is doing its thing down by Cape York Peninsula, but don't worry, it's expected to chill out and move on up north. Meanwhile, we've got a tropical low hanging out off the northeast coast, but it's just going to drift away like a bad date. Over on the east coast, we've got a weak ridge trying to keep things in line, while a second trough is causing some drama near the New South Wales border. And just when you thought it couldn't get any more exciting, another trough is coming in from the southwest to join the party in central and southern Queensland later this week. So, grab your umbrellas and hold on to your hats, because it's going to be a wild ride of troughs and lows. Stay safe out there, folks!
NSW and ACT:
Well, isn't that just peachy? We've got a trough hanging out by the coast, and another one up north causing some showers and thunderstorms. But fear not, folks, these troughs will start to lose their strength as we mosey on through the week. Hold onto your hats, because a cold front and its trusty sidekick trough are planning to crash the party later on in the week and stick around through the weekend. They'll be bringing more showers and overall chaotic conditions before leaving us with a cool, windy, and dry aftermath. So, get ready to batten down the hatches and break out your umbrellas, because it's going to be a wild ride ahead. Just another day in paradise, right?
VIC:
Well, it looks like we've got some weather coming our way, folks. A high pressure system is hanging out over the southern Tasman sea, while a low pressure system and cold front are making their way across the Bight. This combo is going to bring a warm northeasterly airstream over Victoria on Wednesday evening. The cold front will hit western Victoria on Thursday morning, then make its way through central parts later in the day and into the evening. By Friday morning, it'll be heading east, leaving us with a cool southerly airstream for the weekend thanks to a new high pressure system developing south of the Bight. So, get ready to break out those sweaters and umbrellas, because it's going to be a bit chilly. Stay safe out there!
SA:
So, it looks like we've got a low south of the Bight making its way across the state, bringing along a trough and cold front for some added excitement. By late Thursday morning, this dynamic duo should have made it to the eastern border, ready to stir things up. Meanwhile, a high to the south west of Western Australia is patiently waiting its turn to take center stage over coastal areas. Come Saturday, this high will swoop in and establish itself south of the Bight, bringing some much-needed stability with a nice south easterly flow for the weekend. So get ready for some calm and predictable weather ahead, folks!
WA:
Well, isn't this just peachy? We've got a low pressure trough hanging out over the central Pilbara, extending all the way to Tropical Cyclone Zelia off the west Kimberley coast. Zelia is feeling feisty and decided to take a little stroll to the southwest today. But wait, there's more! Zelia isn't satisfied with just one direction, so she's planning to head even further south towards the Pilbara coast on Thursday, all while beefing up her strength. By Friday, she might even crash the party over at the east Pilbara or southwest Kimberley coasts. So, grab your raincoat and hold onto your hats, it's going to be a wild ride!
TAS:
So, it looks like Mother Nature is feeling a bit indecisive this week over in Tasmania. We've got a high pressure system causing some warm northeasterly winds on Thursday, but don't get too comfortable because a cold front is coming in from the west to cool things down on Friday with some westerly winds. And just when you thought you could finally unpack your winter clothes, a southerly stream is expected to roll in on Saturday as a high builds south of the Bight. And to top it all off, the low is reforming over the Tasman Sea on Sunday. Looks like it's going to be a rollercoaster of weather this week, folks. Better hold onto your hats!
NT:
Well, brace yourselves, because the monsoon flow is making its way across the northern part of the NT. And guess what? More monsoonal showers and thunderstorms are on the menu for the week. Down south, things are heating up, but don't worry, relief is on the way. A cloud band and a southerly change are set to swoop in on Thursday, bringing some much-needed cooling. So, get ready to swap out your sun hat for an umbrella and enjoy the show!

Thursday, 13th February
You might want to bring an umbrella if you're out and about in most parts of the state today, as isolated to scattered showers are on the menu. And hey, there's a chance of some thunderstorms in central and southern Queensland - but don't worry, the far west and southwest are safe from the drama. Keep an eye out for those possible severe thunderstorms lurking around Longreach to Goondiwindi, and maybe some raised dust in the Channel Country for that extra fun factor. In the north, showers are going to be putting on a show on the Peninsula, so don't forget your raincoat. And speaking of coats, it's going to be hot out there in the west - like, severe heatwave kind of hot. So maybe consider packing some extra water and sunscreen if you're planning on exploring the Channel Country. As for the winds, they're going to be doing their own little dance today. From west to northwesterly in Far North Queensland, to east to southeasterly down the east coast. And let's not forget about the fresh north to northwesterly winds in the southwest, turning south to southwesterly in the far southwest. So there you have it, folks. A day full of weather adventures awaits you, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!
Friday, 14th February
Well, it seems like there's a slim chance of a shower in the southwest, with a few more scattered showers popping up elsewhere. Keep an eye out for some thunderstorms in the interior, especially in the areas from St George to Georgetown - they might get a bit rowdy. And if you're in the Channel Country, don't be surprised if you see some dust flying around. Temperatures are going to be a bit on the warm side, especially in the interior. And if you're up in the North Tropical Coast, be prepared for some seriously hot weather - it might just feel like you're in a heatwave. So, grab your sunscreen and stay hydrated, folks. It's shaping up to be an interesting day out there.
Saturday, 15th February
Grab your umbrella and sunscreen, folks! It's going to be a mixed bag of weather today. Expect some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in various areas, with the potential for severe thunderstorms in central and southeast Queensland. Make sure to stay hydrated and wear light clothing, especially if you're in the North Tropical Coast where a severe heatwave is possible. And if you're in the far northern Peninsula, be prepared for some widespread showers. Stay safe out there!
Sunday, 16th February
Grab your sunscreen and ice packs, folks! We've got some partly cloudy skies southwest of Cloncurry to Chinchilla, with a chance of isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms popping up here and there. Keep an eye out for those scattered thunderstorms around the interior of Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures are going to be a mixed bag today - below average over the southern interior, near average along the Gulf Coast, and above average everywhere else. It's going to be so hot, we might even see some severe heatwave conditions along the northeast and North Tropical Coast. Stay cool out there!
