National Synoptic Situation

National Temperature and Rainfall

  • Rain typically refers to steady, continuous precipitation that lasts for a longer period, sometimes hours or even days. It can vary in intensity, but it's usually more consistent and widespread.

  • Showers, on the other hand, are shorter bursts of rain, often intermittent. They can be heavy but usually don't last long. Showers are more sporadic and may be followed by dry periods or other types of weather, like sun or clouds.

National Synoptic Situation

QLD:

The current weather situation in Queensland is about as exciting as watching paint dry. A weak ridge is hanging out in the south, while the rest of the state is dealing with a barely noticeable pressure gradient. Tropical Cyclone Alfred is doing its best to make some waves off the coast, but it's really just adding a little extra wind to the mix. Don't get too excited though, Alfred is expected to stay offshore for the next couple of days before potentially drifting towards the southeast coast later in the week. Meanwhile, a trough in the southwest is just chilling out in the interior, not really doing much of anything. So, if you were hoping for some weather drama, you're out of luck - it's all pretty tame out there.

NSW and ACT:

Well folks, it looks like we've got some weather shenanigans happening on the horizon. A ridge of high pressure is kicking out a trough on the coast, while another one is just hanging out in the western inland. And to add to the mix, Tropical Cyclone Alfred is planning a southward journey before making a bold move west towards the Queensland and New South Wales coast. Brace yourselves for increased rainfall, strong winds, and some gnarly waves up north later in the week. Time to bust out those rain boots and hold onto your hats, it's gonna be a wild ride!

VIC:

Well, it looks like Mother Nature is playing a game of musical chairs with high pressure systems down south. Expect some southerly winds today, followed by a shift to east to northeasterly winds on Tuesday. By Wednesday, a weak trough will be passing through Victoria, so hold onto your hats. The next high pressure system will then swoop in from the Bight on Thursday, bringing some more southerly winds our way. It's like a weather rollercoaster, folks!

SA:

Well, it looks like we've got a high pressure system playing musical chairs south of Kangaroo Island, slowly making its way eastward towards Tasmania. Meanwhile, a trough up north is planning a road trip to Queensland. And just when you thought it couldn't get any more exciting, another high is getting ready to set up shop south of the Bight and move eastward later in the week. Mother Nature sure knows how to keep us on our toes!

WA:

Looks like the folks up in northern WA are in for a treat with a broad low pressure trough hanging out overhead. But fear not, because starting Wednesday, that trough will be nudged closer to the Pilbara coast thanks to a high pressure ridge flexing its muscles to the south. This means fresh east to southeasterly winds will be blowing through the area, so hold onto your hats and enjoy the breezy conditions!

TAS:

So, looks like we've got a high hanging out over the state today, but don't get too comfortable because a warm northeasterly wind is about to crash the party as the high moves east on Tuesday. And just when you thought things were settling down, a weak cold front is going to swoop in from the west on Wednesday evening. But hey, no need to stress - a weak high over the Bight will be sliding south of Tasmania during the day to keep things interesting. Just another day in the unpredictable world of weather, folks!

NT:

Looks like Mother Nature is playing favorites up in the Northern Territory with showers and thunderstorms being as isolated as that one friend who always seems to disappear when it's their turn to buy a round. But don't worry, things are slowly changing as a ridge extends over the southern NT, pushing a trough northwards across the Tanami and Barkly Districts. It's like a slow-moving parade making its way through town, except instead of candy, it's bringing some much-needed rain. By Thursday, a high will come in and strengthen that ridge over the southern NT, showing that even weather patterns need a little support every now and then. And as the week comes to a close, the ridge over the northern NT will finally start to loosen up, allowing showers and thunderstorms to make a grand entrance across the north. So grab your umbrella and prepare for some more widespread showers and thunderstorms, because it looks like things are about to get a whole lot wetter up in the Northern Territory. But hey, at least we'll be getting a free car wash out of it.

Current details on TC Alfred:

Below shows the approximate day and time TC Alfred will arrive. First the wind early morning of the 6th of March and then later for the rain. We are starting to see what would be expected, the GFS on the lower intensity scale and ACCESS on the upper end of the intensity scale. Essentially between gale force and Cat 2 gusts.

JTWC Update: 1pm Update

Tropical Cyclone Alfred (18P) is currently tracking southeast with sustained winds of 50 knots (93 km/h), located 250 nautical miles east-northeast of Brisbane. The system is experiencing strong wind shear and dry air intrusion, causing its convection to be displaced to the southeast. Alfred is expected to continue moving southeast before turning sharply westward from Tuesday as a ridge builds to the south. Landfall is forecast north of Brisbane around Thursday, though timing and location remain uncertain. While the cyclone may briefly strengthen over the next 12 hours due to strong outflow, increasing wind shear and cooler sea surface temperatures will likely weaken it before landfall, with winds around 45 knots (83 km/h). Numerical models show some disagreement on the exact timing of its westward turn, with uncertainty increasing beyond 72 hours. After landfall, Alfred is expected to weaken rapidly as it tracks inland.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast - Access-G

Tuesday, 4th March

Well, looks like the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district are in for some high temperatures today. So, for those of you living in that area, be sure to stay cool and hydrated. And maybe consider investing in some extra fans or air conditioning to avoid turning into a human puddle. Stay frosty, folks!

Wednesday, 5th March

Looks like Queensland is in for a real treat today! We've got some isolated to scattered showers in the central and southern regions, with a chance of some widespread downpours in the southeast. And let's not forget about those isolated thunderstorms up north - always a fun time! But hey, if you're in the far southwest, you lucked out with mostly sunny skies. And for those of you dealing with damaging winds in the southeast, just blame it on Tropical Cyclone Alfred - he's the real troublemaker here. As for temperatures, it's a mixed bag. Near or slightly below average in the southeast, but things are heating up in the west. And let's not forget about those severe heatwave conditions up north - perfect weather for baking cookies on your dashboard! So there you have it, folks. Just another day in paradise here in Queensland. Stay dry, stay cool, and don't forget your umbrella!

Thursday, 6th March

Watch out for scattered showers and possible thunderstorms in certain parts of Queensland. Keep an eye out for heavy rain and strong winds, especially in the southeast where Tropical Cyclone Alfred might stir things up. Don't be surprised if you encounter isolated showers and thunderstorms along the coasts and up in Cape York Peninsula. The rest of the region will be partly cloudy. Temperatures will be around average in the southeast, but things will be heating up in the west. The good news is that the severe heatwave conditions in the northwest are finally starting to cool off.

Friday, 7th March

Looks like Mother Nature is feeling a bit indecisive today in central and southern Queensland. You might want to grab an umbrella if you're south of Rockhampton and east of Injune, as scattered showers are on the menu. And if you happen to be in southeastern Queensland, be prepared for some heavy rain and potentially destructive winds thanks to Tropical Cyclone Alfred. But don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom. There will be isolated showers along the coasts and Cape York Peninsula, with a chance of thunderstorms in the northwest and northern Cape York Peninsula. Everywhere else will just be partly cloudy. Temperatures are a mixed bag too. It's going to be hot hot hot in the far west, but cooler in the southeast. So make sure you dress accordingly, folks. And maybe keep an eye on that cyclone just in case. Happy Monday!

Region Round-up - BOM

Forecast for North Tropical Coast and Tablelands:

Looks like we've got a classic case of the sun showing off today. Don't be fooled by those light winds in the morning, they'll be turning into a nice easterly breeze by lunchtime. Temperatures will be dropping overnight, so make sure to grab an extra blanket for those chilly 18 to 22-degree nights. During the day, you can expect the heat to crank up to the low to mid 30s. This calls for some moderate sun protection from 8:30am to 4:20pm. And with a UV Index predicted to hit a whopping 13 [Extreme], it might be a good idea to break out the sunscreen and maybe even a wide-brimmed hat. Just remember, the sun may be shining, but that doesn't mean it won't burn. Stay safe out there, folks!
